Gavi Defends Paredes Amid Post-Match Brawl Review

After Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, a brawl broke out involving several Argentine players and officials, including Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala. Paredes was seen pushing Spain defender Eric Garcia, while Gavi, who did not play in the match, attempted to intervene but was pushed to the ground by Almada.

Paredes also placed his hand in Gavi's face during the altercation. FIFA has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate the incident, which could lead to suspensions for those involved, and the Argentine Football Association may face sanctions.

Gavi expressed that he does not believe Paredes should be suspended, arguing that physicality is part of football and suggesting that any punishment should have been dealt with during the match. Initially, there was confusion as FIFA's system incorrectly indicated that Paredes had been sent off, but this was later corrected, and no disciplinary action was taken against him during the match.
