FIFA Unsheathes Afghan Women’s Football Startup as Refugee Team Heads For Sydney Talent Camp

FIFA has launched a new initiative to support Afghan women's football by creating a refugee team. The team will be led by former Scotland international Pauline Hamill and aims to provide a platform for Afghan women footballers who have fled the country since the Taliban takeover in 2021.

The team will participate in talent identification camps in Sydney from July 23 to 29, with plans for friendly matches later this year. FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the initiative as a successful step towards supporting displaced women athletes globally.

The team, named the Afghan Women's Refugee Team, offers players access to football equipment, mental health services, and educational opportunities. This project is seen as a ray of hope for Afghan women and girls, especially those living as refugees.
