PSN President Tanko Calls for AI Adoption in Pharmacy

On World Pharmacists Day 2026, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), under the leadership of President Pharmacist Ayuba Ibrahim Tanko, called on pharmacists nationwide to intensify efforts against medicine misuse, self-medication, counterfeit drugs, and inappropriate antibiotic use. The theme for the day was “Empowering Pharmacists for a Healthier Future.” Tanko stressed the necessity for pharmacists to update their knowledge and adopt emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance healthcare delivery.

He highlighted the pharmacist's role in educating patients about medication safety and effectiveness, including dosage and potential side effects. Additionally, he advocated for strengthening community healthcare services and implementing the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria's resolution to activate pharmacy-based clinics.

Tanko also addressed the issue of antimicrobial resistance, urging responsible antibiotic use. He announced that the PSN would celebrate its centenary in early 2027 with various activities, reinforcing the pharmacist's role as a guardian of safe medication use and patient advocate.
