Iranian Footballers Seek Refuge in Australia After Protest

Five members of Iran's women's national football team, including Fatemeh Pasandideh, Zahra Ghanbari, Zahra Sarbali, Atefeh Ramazanzadeh, and Mona Hamoudi, sought refuge in Australia after they refused to sing the Iranian national anthem during a match at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. The players remained silent during the anthem played ahead of their opening match against the host nation, Australia.

Following their elimination from the competition after a defeat to Australia and the Philippines, the five players left their team’s camp in Gold Coast and subsequently sought protection from Australian authorities. Reports indicate that the players received assistance from the Australian Federal Police due to concerns for their safety upon returning to Iran, where they could face accusations of being traitors.

Reza Pahlavi has called on the Australian government to ensure the players' safety and provide the necessary support.
