Iranian Women Footballers Seek Asylum in Australia

Five members of the Iranian women's national football team—Fatemeh Pasandideh, Zahra Ghanbari, Zahra Sarbali, Atefeh Ramazanzadeh, and Mona Hamoudi—have sought refuge in Australia after their team was eliminated from the AFC Women's Asian Cup. The controversy began on March 2, during their opening match against South Korea, when the players declined to sing the national anthem, raising concerns about potential reprisals upon their return to Iran.

Following their exit from the tournament, the players left their training camp in Gold Coast to seek protection from the Australian authorities. Reza Pahlavi's office confirmed their departure, and FIFA has contacted Australian officials to ensure their safety.

The players are currently in a safe house and intend to apply for asylum. Donald Trump has commented on the situation, urging Australia to grant protection to the athletes, while Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stated that steps have already been taken to address the situation.
