Five Major Nigerian Firms Report Strong Profit Growth in Nine-Month Period

VFD Group, Dangote Sugar, Cadbury Nigeria, and GTCO all posted significant earnings gains in the first nine months of 2026.

Nigeria's largest publicly listed companies delivered robust financial results for the nine-month period ending September 30, 2026, with most reporting double-digit profit increases despite mixed revenue trends. VFD Group led the gains with a 96 percent jump in profit after tax to N13 billion, compared with N6.63 billion in the same 2025 period.

The investment-focused conglomerate's profit before tax climbed 92 percent to N15.34 billion, while gross earnings expanded 35 percent to N81.88 billion. Dangote Sugar Refinery achieved the most dramatic turnaround, swinging from a N8.72 billion loss before tax in the nine months of 2025 to a N78.17 billion profit in the 2026 period.

The sugar company managed this recovery even as revenue dropped 9.1 percent to N569.41 billion, achieving improved profitability through cost reductions and debt management following a rights offering earlier this year. Cadbury Nigeria posted more modest gains, with pre-tax profit rising 4.75 percent to N14.48 billion while revenue grew 6.24 percent to N126.69 billion.

Financial services giant Guaranty Trust Holding Company reported a pre-tax profit of N879.9 billion for the nine months, driven by increases in interest income, fees and commissions, and trading activity. The holding company's total assets expanded to N18.37 trillion, with a capital adequacy ratio of 34.2 percent.

The results underscore the diversity of profit drivers across Nigeria's corporate sector, from manufacturing to financial services to investment operations. The earnings reports reflect mixed operational conditions across the economy.

While VFD Group and Cadbury expanded their top lines substantially, Dangote Sugar's revenue contraction demonstrates the pressures facing some manufacturing sectors. Collectively, these five companies reported combined pre-tax profits exceeding N988 billion for the nine-month period, signaling resilience among Nigeria's largest quoted enterprises.
