Jet Fuel Shortage Causes Major Flight Disruptions in Nigeria

The aviation sector in Nigeria is experiencing severe disruptions due to a deepening jet fuel shortage, resulting in delayed and rescheduled flights. Airlines are warning that the scarcity of fuel is affecting their ability to maintain schedules, leading to hundreds of passengers being stranded and reconsidering their travel plans.

The price of jet fuel has reportedly increased by 300%, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, including the Israel-Hamas conflict and the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz. The Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON) have threatened to shut down operations unless the government intervenes.

A meeting was held with stakeholders, including the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, but no immediate relief was provided. Ground handling companies, which have outstanding debts exceeding N9 billion, have warned of potential service withdrawals if debts are not settled by April 28, 2026.

The situation continues to exert pressure on operational capacities and the ability to provide safe services.
