Nasarawa Flooding Displaces Thousands, Claims Two Lives
A significant flood in Nasarawa has resulted in the loss of two lives and submerged 18 communities, including Kwatan Bala, Olegokeme, Obendo, and others within Rukubi and Akpanaja Wards of Doma Local Government Area. The flooding, described as massive by residents, began approximately two weeks ago due to increased water volume from the River Benue, leading to the destruction of buildings, farmlands, and property worth millions of naira.
Mr Joel Daniel Onuminya, a resident of Obendo, reported that crops ready for harvest were submerged, leaving families unable to feed themselves. Although the water is receding and some residents are returning home, the damage remains extensive.
Other residents, including Mr Ogiri Philip Usman from Otiya village and Mr Sunday Ijiwo from Ijiwo, confirmed the destruction of property and the displacement of families. They have called on the government for urgent assistance to help recover from their losses.
