NEMA to Enhance Local Flood Rescue Training Initiatives
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is set to train local divers in flood-prone communities to improve rescue operations during flood emergencies. Kenoma Ojuederie, Head of the Benin Operations Office, announced this during a one-day refresher training for emergency management stakeholders focused on urban search and rescue.
The training aims to enhance coordination among various emergency agencies, ensuring they are better prepared to respond when floods occur. Ojuederie emphasized the importance of local divers, who often act as first responders before external help arrives, and stated that the training would improve their rescue methods.
He also highlighted the agency's 80 percent preparedness for emergency response and urged the public to heed early warning signs of rising floodwaters. Dr Jerry Idahosa, Executive Secretary of the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EDOSEMA), called the training timely and crucial for effective emergency response.
Abu Jibrin from the Federal Fire Service underscored the need for adequate preparation and teamwork in disaster management.
