Food Prices Surge in Nigeria, April 2026 Report Shows

In April 2026, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported notable increases in food prices across Nigeria. The average price of 1 kg of tomatoes rose by 6.60% from March 2026, reaching ₦1,177.92, although it decreased by 8.23% compared to April 2025.

Similarly, the price of 1 kg of brown beans increased by 0.99% month-on-month to ₦338.93, but saw a significant year-on-year decrease of 44.89%. The average price of 1 kg of white garri rose by 0.93% to ₦808.96, with a year-on-year drop of 39.86%.

Other items like onions and fresh ginger also saw month-on-month increases of 0.98% and 0.73%, respectively. The report highlighted that Bayelsa recorded the highest average price for tomatoes at ₦1,600.73, while Plateau had the lowest at ₦730.48.

The analysis indicates regional price variations, with the South-South region generally having higher food prices compared to other regions.
