Lagos Food Prices Surge in May 2026 Amid Rising Costs

In May 2026, food prices across major Lagos markets rose as sellers transferred increased transport costs to consumers. The average price of diesel rose from N1,245 per liter in April to N1,330 per liter in May, reversing the price relief experienced in April.

A survey conducted by Nairametrics tracked 67 staple food items across markets including Mushin, Mile 12, Daleko, and Oyingbo, revealing a mixed month for food prices. Tomato sellers in Mile 12 reported price declines, but spoilage risks forced quick price adjustments.

Abass, a trader in Mushin, noted that a decline in pepper supply due to reduced inflow from farming areas led to price increases, despite weakened consumer demand. Significant price spikes were recorded for pepper, bean flour, and vegetable oil, while 23 food items showed no price movement compared to five in April, indicating emerging short-term market stabilization.
