FG Launches Livestock Baseline Study for Food Security

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development announced the commencement of a nationwide baseline study aimed at establishing a credible evidence base for monitoring and evaluating the livestock sector. This study, which will take place from April 20 to 24, 2026, is designed to assess the current status of the sector and enable systematic tracking of performance over time.

The outcomes are expected to inform policy formulation and investment decisions, aligning with the ministry's broader commitment to transparency and accountability. The study will utilize a mixed-method approach, integrating secondary data reviews, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews to ensure both quantitative precision and qualitative depth.

It will cover various livestock value chains, including cattle, beef, dairy, poultry, and small ruminants, across six selected states in Nigeria. The Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Henrietta Okokon, stated that the results of the baseline study are anticipated to be made public within a week and will serve as a critical benchmark for measuring progress and strengthening coordination across the livestock ecosystem.
