Nigerian Leaders Push for Deep Seaport Development

At the 1st International Deep Seaport Investment Forum held in Lagos, former Nigerian President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and former Chairman of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), Bode George, called for the establishment of international seaports in Nigeria.

They warned that without appropriate steps, Nigeria risks falling behind in global maritime standards, which could hinder trade competitiveness and economic growth. Jonathan highlighted the need for Nigeria to modernize its shipping capabilities, noting that the Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL) faced significant challenges due to outdated vessels and strategic missteps.

He cautioned against repeating past mistakes that led to the collapse of the NNSL. Adegboyega Oyetola, representing the NPA, emphasized the commitment to developing green ports and integrating modern technology.

The forum underscored the importance of aligning Nigeria's maritime infrastructure with global trends to attract sufficient cargo traffic and enhance the country's maritime potential.
