Asido Foundation Applauds Nigeria's Suicide Decriminalization

The Asido Foundation has welcomed the Federal Executive Council's approval of an amendment to Nigeria's National Mental Health Act, which decriminalizes attempted suicide. Niyi Olowola, Chairman of the foundation’s Board of Trustees, stated that this decision marks a significant shift from punishment to care for individuals in suicidal distress.
He emphasized that the foundation, which led a delegation to advocate for this change in 2024, recognizes the collective efforts of various mental health professionals, civil society organizations, and policymakers in this campaign. Olowola commended President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council for their compassionate approach to suicide prevention.
Prof Jibril Abdulmalik, the foundation's Founder and CEO, noted that the reform could encourage vulnerable individuals to seek help without fear of prosecution. He called for the amendment to be supported by increased access to mental health services and trained professionals.
The announcement coincided with the foundation's seventh anniversary, established in 2019 to promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma in Nigeria.
