Four Nigerians Arrested in India for Social Media Fraud

Four Nigerians were arrested in India for their involvement in social media fraud and impersonation. The suspects, identified as Chinedu, Sundai, Jule, and Uchenwa, were apprehended by Gurugram Police and the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force.

The investigation began after a complaint was filed on April 25, 2022, by a victim who was defrauded by a woman he met on Instagram. The victim was tricked into transferring ₹69,900 as a registration fee upon the woman's arrival in India.

During the investigation, police recovered 19 mobile phones, a laptop, and 18 Indian SIM cards. Uchenwa, a 49-year-old suspect, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh, while Chinedu and Jule entered India on student visas.

The fraud involved emotional manipulation and false claims about customs duties, leading victims to transfer large sums of money. One victim reported losing nearly ₹40 lakh after being contacted by individuals posing as customs officials.

The cybercrime team, led by ASP Vishal Vikram Singh, conducted the operation that led to the arrests.
