Emefiele Trial: Suspects Confess to $6.23M Fraud

The trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele is ongoing at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, presided over by Justice Hamza Muazu. Recent testimonies from prosecution witnesses, including Eloho Okpoziakpo from the Special Fraud Unit, revealed that suspects confessed to their involvement in a $6.23 million fraud.

This money was allegedly withdrawn under the pretense of funding for international election observers during the 2023 general elections. However, investigations contradicted these claims, revealing that the funds were fraudulently taken.

The court heard that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation denied ever requesting these funds, raising serious concerns during the investigation. Documents presented included a presidential approval from former President Muhammadu Buhari for the release of funds, which were processed in cash.

Emefiele faces 20 amended charges, including abuse of office and conspiracy, and has pleaded not guilty. The trial is set to continue on July 2, 2026.
