EFCC Claims Buhari's Signature Forged in Emefiele Trial

In an ongoing trial at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed that the signature of former President Muhammadu Buhari was forged to authorize the withdrawal of $6.2 million. This claim was made during the prosecution of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele, who faces 20 counts of charges including criminal breach of trust, forgery, and abuse of office.

EFCC witness Chinedu Eneanya testified that investigations revealed the funds were allegedly meant for foreign election observers during the 2023 general elections. The court learned that the funds were improperly moved from the CBN, and forensic analysis indicated that the signatures of Buhari and Boss Mustapha were not genuine.

During cross-examination, Emefiele's counsel, Mathew Burkaa, noted that no forensic examination of Emefiele's own signature was conducted. The trial is set to continue on April 28, with the prosecution expected to present additional witnesses.
