WHO Declares Health Emergency Over Ebola Outbreak

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency on Sunday due to a new Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. The outbreak has resulted in at least 90 suspected deaths and 246 confirmed cases, with the DRC accounting for the majority of these cases.

The WHO's Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that the outbreak does not meet the criteria for a pandemic but poses a significant risk of international spread. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is actively monitoring the situation and has issued public health advisories, although there are currently no confirmed cases of Ebola in Nigeria.

The outbreak has raised concerns about potential spikes in infections among healthcare workers, with at least four deaths reported among medical personnel. The WHO has convened an emergency committee to provide temporary recommendations for countries to respond effectively to the outbreak.
