Nigeria's Fuel Crisis: Petrol Prices May Hit N2,000/Liter

The fuel crisis in Nigeria is intensifying, with petrol prices steadily climbing and fears that they may soon reach N2,000 per liter. The global oil market's volatility is significantly impacting Nigeria, which relies heavily on imported refined petroleum products.

Despite Dangote Refinery's contributions to local refining, the rising crude prices continue to affect pump prices. As of the report, petrol prices at filling stations range from N1,200 to N1,350 per liter, with further increases anticipated.

Economists, including Adatu Rimi and Dr. Abdussalam Kani, recommend that the federal government adopt practical measures such as collaborating with Dangote Refinery to refine crude oil for domestic consumption and introducing subsidies for public transport. They also suggest deploying vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) to reduce transport costs.

Prof. Gafar Ijaiya emphasizes the need for direct crude supply to stabilize prices, while Samuel Caulcrick calls for intervention from the Central Bank of Nigeria to lower fuel costs.
