Makinde Proposes Cheaper Petrol Framework Ahead of 2027

On September 7, 2026, Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State governor and presidential candidate for the APM in the 2027 elections, proposed a new framework aimed at providing cheaper petrol without reverting to the petrol subsidy regime. During the inauguration of the APM's presidential campaign headquarters in Abuja, Makinde argued for a system where Nigerians would benefit directly from the country's crude oil through lower domestic supply to refineries.

He criticized the current pricing system, which layers costs across refining, transportation, distribution, and taxation, making it inefficient and opaque. Makinde called for transparency in the petroleum value chain, stating that Nigerians should understand the costs involved and who benefits from them.

He also reiterated his commitment to his broader 'Reset Nigeria' agenda, aimed at ensuring the country's resources yield real benefits for citizens. The event featured support from notable figures, including Mamman Daura and Yusuf Dantalle, and highlighted Makinde's qualifications for the upcoming presidential election.
