Joint Revenue Board Reports 21 States Adopt New Tax Laws

The Joint Revenue Board (JRB) announced that 21 states in Nigeria have successfully passed the Model Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law. Mr Olusegun Adesokan, the Executive Secretary of the JRB, made this announcement during a press conference attended by Nairametrics.
This development follows the Federal Government's issuance of implementation guidelines for transitioning from the repealed tax laws to the new Tax Acts 2025, which took effect on January 1, 2026. Adesokan noted that the harmonised tax and levy heads are set to replace over 100 fragmented taxes and levies at the subnational level.
The new tax heads include income tax, stamp duties, property tax, road tax, haulage levy, economic development levy, harmonised levy, user charge, and daily ticket. He also mentioned that states are adopting technology for improved revenue administration and that the board has a zero-tolerance policy for roadblocks that hinder cash collection.
Collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force will be strengthened to apprehend defaulters, with enforcement commencing soon.
