Gambia to Study Nigeria's TETFund for Education Funding

The Government of the Republic of the Gambia has announced plans for a study tour of Nigeria's Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to improve higher education funding in Gambia. This was revealed during a visit on Monday by Gambia’s Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez, to TETFund's Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, in Abuja.

The delegation aims to inform TETFund about the establishment of the Gambia’s Tertiary and Higher Education Trust (THET) Fund, modeled after TETFund, and to seek cooperation for the planned study tour. Professor Gomez noted that Gambian authorities have monitored TETFund's achievements, which influenced their decision to create a similar agency.

Echono provided an overview of TETFund's history and its funding mechanisms, including the three percent Education Tax on companies, and emphasized the need for collaboration in research and capacity development. The Gambian delegation included Ms Isatou Auber, Dr Samba Sowe, and Ms Ndey Anta Taal.
