Gbenga Hashim Calls for Labour's Role in Democracy

Dr. Gbenga Hashim, a former presidential candidate and energy entrepreneur, called on the Nigerian labour movement to actively safeguard the country's democracy during a visit to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) led by Joe Ajaero.

He described the gradual slide towards authoritarianism and stressed that the historical progress of Nigeria cannot be separated from the sacrifices of the working class. Hashim highlighted the need for political leaders to refocus government policies to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians, warning that neglect could weaken democratic institutions.

He commended the current leadership of the NLC for their steadfastness in defending workers' rights despite facing pressure and intimidation. Hashim's remarks underscored the necessity for unity among labour leaders and political actors to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure governance remains people-centered.

He also noted the global recognition of Nigeria's labour movement, citing the Arthur Svensson Prize for Trade Union Rights awarded to the NLC.
