Germany Eases Permanent Residence Rules for Foreigners

The German government has published guidance outlining four categories of foreigners who can obtain a settlement permit, or permanent residence title, under easier conditions. This guidance, applicable to skilled workers already residing in Germany on temporary permits, is based on Section 18c of the Residence Act (AufenthG).

The four eligible groups include EU Blue Card holders, individuals who completed higher or vocational training in Germany, highly skilled workers, and self-employed persons. While belonging to one of these categories does not guarantee automatic approval, it allows for relaxed or streamlined standard requirements for applicants who meet the relevant criteria.

All applicants must pay a fee of up to approximately €150 (around ₦250,000, depending on the exchange rate) at the time of application, with the exact amount varying by status group. This initiative is seen as a significant milestone for migrants in Germany, providing long-term security for holders and their immediate families.
