German Government Sets Conditions for Foreign Graduates' Permanent Residence

The German government has outlined five conditions for foreign graduates living and working in Germany on a temporary residence permit to apply for a settlement permit, which grants permanent residence. This guidance, published on the official Make it in Germany portal, is aimed at skilled workers who have completed higher or vocational training in Germany.

To be eligible for the settlement permit, applicants must have held a residence permit for employment as a "skilled worker" for at least two years, be working in a role authorized by their current permit, have contributed to the statutory pension insurance scheme for a minimum of 24 months, demonstrate German language proficiency at B1 level, and show adequate living space. The settlement permit, issued under Section 18c of the Residence Act, allows holders to stay indefinitely and work as employees or self-employed individuals.

Additionally, it facilitates family reunification without the restrictions of a temporary permit.
