Ghana-South Africa Diplomatic Tensions Over Migrant Death

Ghana and South Africa are experiencing heightened diplomatic tensions following the death of Ghanaian migrant Bashiru Isak, aged 40, who was shot during anti-immigrant protests in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. The Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has linked his death to ongoing xenophobic attacks and has formally lodged a protest with the South African government.

In contrast, South African officials, including Justice Minister Mmamaloko Kubayi, have dismissed Ghana's claims as inaccurate and lacking evidence. Kubayi stated that no deaths were recorded during the protests and accused Ghana of spreading misinformation.

Preliminary investigations by South African police suggest that Isak's death may have been related to an extortion attempt rather than xenophobic violence. The South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola cautioned Ghana against making public statements based on incomplete information.

This incident has further strained diplomatic relations between the two countries, as thousands of migrants continue to flee South Africa amid security concerns.
