Ghana Evacuates 1,000 Citizens Amid South Africa Violence

Ghana has initiated the final phase of evacuating its nationals from South Africa, with 1,000 citizens set to return home on special flights scheduled for Sunday and Monday. This action follows the successful repatriation of more than 900 nationals, raising the total number of citizens returned to over 1,900 amid persistent anti-migrant attacks.

The Ghanaian government announced its intention to seek compensation from the South African government for property and assets allegedly lost by its citizens during the violence. Additionally, Ghana has petitioned the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the attacks on foreigners, asserting that the violence could constitute crimes against humanity.

Ghana, along with Nigeria, has urged the African Union (AU) to address the escalating anti-migrant crisis in South Africa at its next summit. Reports indicate that over 160,000 foreign nationals have departed South Africa since May due to violent anti-immigrant protests, driven by rising unemployment and economic pressures.
