Ghanaian Twins and American Woman Admit to $9M Scam

Jamal Abubakari and Kamal Abubakari, both 22, along with Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie, 53, of Hawaii, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Their guilty pleas were entered on October 13 and October 20, 2026, respectively.
The defendants conspired to defraud older individuals of over $9 million through romance scams from July 2024 to April 2026, targeting victims in the United States, Germany, and Austria via dating websites and social media. They created fake personas to establish personal relationships with victims, who were misled into sending money to accounts controlled by the conspirators.
Portions of the funds were sent to co-conspirators in Ghana and elsewhere. As part of their plea agreements, the defendants agreed to forfeit seized jewellery, including luxury items.
Each defendant faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, with sentencing set for February 9 and 10, 2027.
