Gombe State Hospital Laboratory Achieves WHO Accreditation

Gombe State has achieved a significant milestone in public health with the accreditation of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital by the World Health Organization (WHO) for measles and rubella diagnostic testing. This accreditation integrates the laboratory into the WHO Global Measles and Rubella Laboratory Network, making Gombe one of the few locations in Nigeria with internationally accredited diagnostic capabilities for these diseases.

The achievement reflects the commitment of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya's administration to enhance healthcare systems. The laboratory underwent rigorous assessments to meet stringent quality standards, including sample handling, biosafety, and proficiency testing.

Dr. Dawa Sambo, Chief Medical Director of the Gombe State Specialist Hospital, stated that this accreditation allows local medical laboratory scientists to conduct necessary diagnostic tests, reducing reliance on distant laboratories and improving response times for disease surveillance.

This development is crucial given the ongoing public health threats posed by measles and rubella, particularly among children.
