Gombe Assembly Approves State Police Bill for Local Security
The Gombe State House of Assembly passed a bill to create a State Police Service distinct from the Federal Police Service. The bill, which contains 26 clauses, was transmitted by the National Assembly on October 6, 2026, for concurrence as per Section 9(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
A seven-man Ad-hoc Committee on Constitution Review, chaired by Deputy Speaker Hon. Sadam Bello Sale, was formed to work on the bill. The committee consulted relevant stakeholders and presented a report that received support from a two-thirds majority of the members, in line with Order 17, Rule 3 of the Gombe State House of Assembly Standing Orders, 2020.
During a plenary session, the House adopted the committee's report and passed the bill, joining other state legislatures in endorsing state policing to address security challenges. Speaker of the House, Abubakar Muhammad Luggerewo, stated that the proposed legal framework would strengthen security in the country.
