Gombe Workshop Tackles Misinformation Ahead of Elections

In Gombe State, clerics and journalists gathered for a two-day workshop organized by Alkal Fact Check and Media Literacy Organization to address the rising misinformation crisis as Nigeria approaches its election season. Editor Alkal Hassan Bala emphasized the urgency of the initiative, highlighting the heightened risk of misinformation from both local and foreign actors.

The workshop included practical sessions on fact-checking and verifying digital content to counter false narratives. Bala noted the sophistication of AI-generated content and deepfakes as emerging threats.

The training specifically targeted Islamic clerics due to their significant influence on public opinion. Emir Gomb Abubakar Shehu Abubakar Dan Amana Gomb and Alhaji Abubakar Isma Ila underscored the moral obligation to uphold truth in the face of misinformation.

Nigeria Union of Journalists President Alhassan Yahya praised the initiative for equipping participants with skills to distinguish between false and authentic information. Ibrahim Isa, Director General of Gombe State Media Corporation, warned that unchecked misinformation could lead to confusion and violence.
