FG Removes 5% Telecom Tax to Lower Costs for Nigerian Mobile Users

The Federal Government of Nigeria has removed the 5% excise tax on telecommunication services, including voice calls and data, to alleviate cost pressures on millions of mobile users. The decision to revoke the tax, which had faced widespread criticism from industry players and consumer advocates, aims to enhance affordability and accessibility of telecom services.

The removal of the tax was directed by President Muhammadu Buhari following discussions outlined in the recently passed Finance Act. Stakeholders, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), had strongly opposed the levy, citing concerns over increased digital access costs and the financial strain on telecom operators.
