Despite 50% hike, Nigeria’s telecoms tariffs still cheap – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently announced a 50% increase in telecom tariffs, but stated that prices remain relatively cheap due to healthy competition in the sector. The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Aminu Maida, revealed that despite the hike, voice call rates in Nigeria have hovered around N18 per minute since the early 2000s.

Maida emphasized the importance of competition in keeping prices low and assured that the commission would enforce rules to encourage competitiveness and transparency among operators. He also cautioned against relying on Truecaller for identity verification, as the platform may produce misleading results.

Maida announced plans for a public coverage tariff map to help subscribers choose networks based on service quality and pricing. Additionally, NCC will focus on spectrum management and trade to optimize usage and improve service delivery and national security.
