Google Launches Global SynthID Detector for AI Content

Google has expanded access to its SynthID Detector, allowing users worldwide to check images, videos, and audio files for signs of AI generation. Pushmeet Kohli, vice president of Science and Strategic Initiatives at Google DeepMind, announced this development in a blog post.
The tool, previously available in an early version to media professionals, is now accessible globally in English. It enables users to detect SynthID watermarks in AI-generated content from Google and partners, including OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Kakao, with Apple expected to join soon.
This expansion aims to help users make informed decisions about the media they encounter online. Kohli noted that Google has utilized SynthID to identify AI-generated media since its introduction in 2023.
The detector complements verification features in Google Search, the Gemini app, and Chrome, collectively handling over one million requests daily. The tool addresses concerns over synthetic media misuse, particularly in financial scams in Nigeria, while emphasizing that a lack of detectable watermark does not guarantee authenticity.
