Kebbi Governor Idris Revamps Healthcare Sector

Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has taken significant steps to address the healthcare sector's challenges since assuming leadership in 2023.

The state has been identified as one of the worst performers in Nigeria regarding maternal and child mortality indicators. In an interview, Gov.

Idris highlighted the dire conditions in hospitals, where patients often lie on the floor due to a lack of basic hospital beds. His administration is committed to a comprehensive overhaul of healthcare facilities, including significant renovations at Argungu General Hospital and Birnin Kebbi Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, which serve as major referral centers.

The focus is on strengthening primary healthcare centers, particularly in rural communities, as they are the first point of contact for citizens. To combat the chronic shortage of healthcare professionals, the governor plans to establish the Kauran Gwandu College of Nursing and Midwifery.

Additionally, welfare improvements for healthcare workers are being introduced to stabilize the workforce and enhance retention.
