Umar Namadi Calls for Stronger Media Fact-Checking in 2026

At the 2026 All Nigeria Editors Conference in Enugu, Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi called on newsroom leaders across Nigeria to strengthen verification systems and enhance fact-checking capabilities to combat the rising threat of artificial intelligence-generated disinformation. He emphasized that the media's role should extend beyond merely breaking news, advocating for responsible publishing and clarity in conveying information to the public.

Namadi warned that advanced AI tools and digital platforms could easily produce convincing false narratives, which pose significant risks to electoral integrity. He stated that credible elections depend on well-informed citizens who can discern truth from deception.

The governor urged media organizations to invest in verification tools, train journalists in digital literacy, and collaborate to debunk false information. He also called for the enforcement of laws against malicious falsehoods while respecting press freedom, citing the Cybercrimes Act and the Electoral Act as frameworks for addressing harmful disinformation.

Namadi advocated for public education campaigns to help citizens identify manipulated content.
