Safe Hands Foundation Calls for Water Access in Schools

The Safe Hands Foundation has expressed concern over the lack of running water in public schools across Rivers State, calling on governments and stakeholders to invest in hygiene infrastructure. Dr Okolie Okechukwu, the foundation's founder, made this statement during a workshop in Port Harcourt on Global Handwashing Day, themed ‘Be a Handwashing Hero’.
He announced the launch of a water access project aimed at providing running water for handwashing in schools. Okechukwu highlighted that the absence of water makes it challenging for students and teachers to maintain basic hygiene.
He noted that restoring water access in schools could cost between ₦200,000 and ₦500,000. The foundation plans to collaborate with government and private sectors to ensure access to potable water.
Okechukwu urged participants to promote good hygiene practices to reduce hospital visits. Community leader Sir Ben Ike also emphasized the importance of proper handwashing to prevent illnesses.
