Senate Introduces Safeguards Against State Police Misuse

The Nigerian Senate has unveiled a series of constitutional safeguards aimed at preventing the political misuse of state police powers. This initiative is part of a proposed bill to establish state police services across Nigeria, addressing concerns that governors might exploit local police for political gain.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele outlined the safeguards designed to ensure accountability and protect citizens' rights. The bill, which received approval from the Senate on Wednesday, includes provisions for a decentralized police framework while retaining the federal police's responsibilities.

It allows state police to enforce state laws and maintain public safety within their jurisdictions. The federal police will continue to handle national security threats and intervene in state police operations under strictly defined circumstances.

The proposed framework aims to balance local police autonomy with federal oversight, addressing long-standing concerns about potential abuses by state governors. The bill is expected to be transmitted to the National Assembly for further consideration.
