House Aligns with Senate on Tinubu’s State Police Bill

The Nigerian House of Representatives is moving to align with the Senate regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s executive bill aimed at establishing a state police system. The House committee on constitutional review, chaired by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, is set to scrutinize the bill to avoid duplication of efforts already completed by the Senate.

The Senate has introduced eight additional amendments for consideration. The House had previously passed its own version of the State Police Bill on June 11, but rescinded that decision on July 14 when President Tinubu transmitted the executive bill to the National Assembly.

Kalu emphasized the need for a comprehensive framework to address Nigeria's worsening security challenges and noted that the bill is crucial for establishing a multi-tier police system. The committee is working to ensure a swift legislative process, aiming for prompt presidential assent once the bill is passed by the National Assembly.
