Tinubu Sends State Police Bill to Nigerian Senate

President Bola Tinubu formally transmitted the State Police Constitution Amendment Bill to the Nigerian Senate, a significant move towards enhancing security reform in Nigeria. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this development during a plenary session on Tuesday, revealing that the Senate would begin considering the proposed constitutional amendment on Wednesday.

The bill seeks to amend relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution to provide a legal framework for the creation and operation of state police across the federation. This legislative proposal is expected to decentralize police power, granting state governments greater authority to address security challenges within their jurisdictions.

This initiative follows repeated calls from President Tinubu for constitutional reform to strengthen the security architecture of the country. In February, he urged the National Assembly to amend the constitution to accommodate state police, arguing that the current security structure requires reform to effectively tackle terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.

The Senate is expected to continue deliberating on the bill as part of broader constitutional amendment efforts.
