Nigerian House of Representatives Advocate Ban on Hazardous Pesticides Due to Health Risks

The House of Representatives in Nigeria, led by member Abak Etim Ekpo, has called for the gradual ban of highly hazardous pesticides (HHP) in the country. Hon.

Clement Jimbo highlighted the severe health and environmental risks posed by these pesticides, including acute and chronic hazards to human health and the ecosystem. Concerns were raised over the high suicide rates in Nigeria linked to the ingestion of HHP pesticides like DDVP Sniper.

Reports indicate a rise in pesticide poisoning cases, soil degradation, and food contamination. Research shows that several common pesticides used in Nigeria contain cancer-causing ingredients.

The motion aims to address these issues through a nationwide review and inventory of highly hazardous pesticides.
