House Passes NACRID Bill to Enhance Rural Infrastructure

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has passed the NACRID Establishment Bill for a second reading, which aims to create a dedicated institution to coordinate, develop, and monitor rural infrastructure projects across the country. Sponsored by Mr.

Saidu Musa Abdullahi, the bill is designed to address the development gap between urban and rural communities. Mr.

Abdullahi stated that the proposed commission would provide an institutional framework to advance the government's constitutional objectives through a coordinated approach to rural infrastructure. He referenced the defunct Directorate of Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI) to illustrate the potential impact of targeted investment in rural infrastructure.

The NACRID is intended to complement existing Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) without duplicating their responsibilities. The commission will primarily act as a financing, coordination, intervention, and monitoring agency, with project implementation handled by State Rural Infrastructure and Development Boards.

The House's support for the bill paves the way for further legislative action.
