Akada Children's Book Festival Celebrates African Storytelling

The Akada Children's Book Festival, in its eighth edition, took place on May 23, 2026, at Rugby School in Lagos, with the theme "Big Dreams, Bold Stories." The event aimed to revive reading culture among children in Nigeria, addressing the gap in the market for children's picture books authored by Nigerians. Convenor Olubunmi Aboderin Talabi emphasized the importance of introducing age-appropriate texts to inspire children's love for reading.

The festival featured various tents, including those for book displays, games, and food, and provided opportunities for children to engage with literature through interactive activities. Notably, Aunti Sola Ojikutu Njoku read a Yoruba book to children, fostering cultural appreciation.

The festival also supported self-published authors in reaching their audience, highlighting the significance of local storytelling and representation in children's literature.
