UNEP Reports Environmental Damage from Middle East Conflict

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has issued a statement highlighting the severe environmental damage caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Inger Andersen, UNEP's Executive Director, noted that strikes on oil facilities, particularly those near urban areas like Tehran, have resulted in heavy smoke and hazardous compounds being released into the air, posing serious health risks to the population, including young children.

The conflict has also led to extensive oil spills and uncontrolled fires, contaminating soil and water resources, which further threatens food supplies and public health. The region, already facing significant environmental stress, particularly regarding water resources, is at risk of catastrophic consequences as strikes on desalination plants exacerbate the situation.

Andersen emphasized the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities to allow for recovery and restoration of the environment in the affected areas.
