Lai Mohammed Reveals How Opposition Defeated PDP in 2015

In a speech delivered at Abbe College in Cambridge, UK, on Wednesday, Lai Mohammed, a former minister, elaborated on how the opposition successfully defeated the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections. He traced the origins of this political transformation back to the aftermath of Nigeria's 2003 general elections, describing it as a notable political tsunami.

Mohammed emphasized the importance of discipline and strategic unity among the divided opposition forces, which led to the formation of new alliances. This initiative culminated in the establishment of the Action Congress of Democrats (ACD), which later transformed into the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Despite the ACN's control over several states at the time, it was noted that the party positioned itself as a prominent opposition force nationally. Mohammed remarked on the expansion of the ACN across six states, which facilitated the coalition that established the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013.

The APC quickly emerged as the leading opposition force, ultimately achieving a historic victory over the PDP in the 2015 elections.
