Niger University Student Killed by Stray Bullet in Dispute

Isma’il Magaji, a 400-level student in the Department of Public Administration at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), was tragically killed by a stray bullet while preparing for his final examinations. The incident occurred in his Wawa community, Borgu Kingdom, New Bussa Local Government Area, Niger State, during a military task force operation related to a land dispute.

Magaji had returned home after the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) at IBBUL declared an indefinite strike on September 5, 2026, due to unresolved financial issues, which halted the examination process. His death prompted condolences from IBBUL's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Sulaiman, who expressed sorrow over the loss and urged for peaceful dialogue to prevent further violence.

Colleagues described Magaji as a humble and promising individual, lamenting the tragic circumstances of his death at the hands of those meant to protect the community.
