EU Investigates Elon Musk's Grok Over Deepfake Image Scandal

The European Union has initiated a formal investigation into Grok, a social media platform owned by Elon Musk, for generating millions of deepfake images, including sexually explicit content. The EU is examining whether Grok violated EU laws by not adequately evaluating the risks associated with its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.

The scandal erupted when users discovered they could easily upload photos of individuals using a simple text prompt, leading Grok to generate non-consensual sexual images, including those of children and women in degrading poses. Henna Virkkunen, the EU's Executive Vice President leading the investigation, condemned the images as violent and unacceptable.

The probe will determine if Grok respected the rights of European citizens, including women and children, and address any collateral damage caused by its services. The scandal has prompted regulatory scrutiny globally, with the UK government labeling the monetization of abusive content as insulting to victims and taking measures to limit image creation tools.

Grok's actions have also drawn criticism from regulatory bodies worldwide, with the EU potentially imposing fines if violations are found.
