NGE and SERAP Call for End to Journalists' Harassment on Human Rights Day

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) jointly addressed a press conference in Ikeja on Human Rights Day, urging Nigerian authorities to release detained individuals and stop intimidating journalists. They highlighted the rising threats to media independence in Nigeria, with 56 journalists assaulted or arrested in August 2024 alone.

Recent arrests of journalists like Fejiro Oliv and Azuka Ogujiuba on cyberbullying charges were cited as examples. SERAP and NGE are pursuing legal action against repressive laws targeting journalists, emphasizing the need to protect freedom of the press and uphold human rights.
