IPI Nigeria Urges Nigerian Government to Stop Harassing Journalists

The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to halt the harassment of journalists and combat the culture of impunity against media organizations. The appeal was made during the organization's annual general meeting in Abuja.

IPI Nigeria highlighted cases of aggression and repression faced by journalists across various states and platforms in Nigeria. The organization demanded a review of existing laws, including the Cybercrime Act and criminal defamation laws, to align with global standards on freedom of expression.

Notable figures mentioned include the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and governors of Niger and Akwa Ibom states. Vice President Kashim Shettima received commendation for pledging to intervene in the matter to support press freedom.
