HURIWA Alerts on Political Violence in Imo State

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed serious concerns regarding the rising political crisis in Imo State, particularly in the Ideato North and Ideato South local government areas. In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the National Coordinator, Emmanuel Nnadozi Onwubiko, highlighted reports of violence against political movements linked to Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere.

HURIWA described incidents of harassment and attacks by armed men, claiming that these actions disrupt political meetings and threaten citizens' rights. The organization has called on Governor Hope Uzodinma to ensure the protection of citizens and uphold their right to support political groups without fear.

HURIWA urged Nigeria's top security officials, including the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services, to intervene and halt violent attacks against opposition members. They demanded a full-scale investigation into these violent acts and the prosecution of those involved in recent political violence and arson.
